Intelligence, education or the number of books you have read have a very insignificant influence on how a person can speak. By reading and studying, you just expand your passive vocabulary which is absolutely useless for speaking itself. You need to expand your active vocabulary as much as possible. See below.
Good writing is a sign of high intelligence and a rich passive vocabulary. By writing, reading, memorizing or listening, your passive vocabulary is expanded. However, it does not expand the active vocabulary which determines how well you can speak.
The influence of nervousness on the ability, respectively on the inability, to speak can be fatal. It is not a solution to get rid of nervousness. Not even actors, who have been performing in the theatre for 30 years, have been able to get rid of nervousness and they admit that they have stopped trying. The solution how to speak well in any situation can be found in well-known saying. A hard drill makes an easy battle. Do not put up with being able to speak well in front of your friends! You have to learn how to speak perfectly in front of your friends and people who do not make you feel nervous!
Passive vocabulary is a database of words and collocations saved in your memory. It is very extensive, steadily and reliably saved, but working with it is a slow process. Passive vocabulary of an average person includes 30.000 to 50.000 expressions. Its extent is determined by education and the volume and quality of reading. It can take a second or longer to find a single word in such a large database. You might think that to find one in tens of thousands words is a lightning speed. Yes, it is indeed, but not if you want to speak. Try to say the following sentence and leave a second between the words (you can add the well-known thinking-like eeeeh). "You look very beautiful today. Can I buy you a cup of coffee?" As you can see, passive vocabulary is useless for speaking.
Active vocabulary is also a database of words and collocations, but it is saved in a slightly different way and at a different place than the passive one. It is not necessary to bore you with physiological differences. What you should know is that to find a word in this database does not take longer than a few tens of milliseconds! The size of an average person’s active vocabulary is 4.000 – 8.000 expressions. In comparison to passive vocabulary, its size is not determined by intelligence or education. It is common that active vocabulary of a person who only finished elementary school is more extensive than the one of a scientist. The reason is simple. Active vocabulary is fixed and expanded by constant active use only. Thus, it is not a mystery why a marketer can be much more eloquent and popular than a nuclear physicist.
There is a simple answer – by talking, talking, talking to people. Yes, it is really that simple, but actually unfeasible. The fact that you need to improve your active vocabulary means that you do not have enough opportunities to speak during your day. Fortunately, there is another, according to many experiences, a more suitable way how to learn to speak perfectly. It is a method which has been used by many press agents, professional commentators and politicians who have been advised so by their PR agencies, and which is part of class work at drama schools.
